Around the Co-op: Fresh & Frozen News

Spring is in the air. That means it is seed time again! This year the Produce Department is featuring seeds from High Mowing Seed Company, a seed distributor that focuses on organic heirloom and open-pollinated varieties. High Mowing Organic Seeds is an independently owned, farm-based seed company dedicated to supporting sustainable agriculture and providing farmers and gardeners with the highest quality certified organic seed.

We are offering several flower and herb seed varieties, lots of great tomatoes and squashes as well as melons, peas and beans. All seed packets are $1.99, an incredible price for certified organic and non-hybrid garden seed. Look for transplants soon as well.

We continue to load up on local produce, always expanding our suppliers and variety. If you haven’t signed up for a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) box, you still have time. More information is available at cottleorganics.com, blackriverorganicfarm.com, or jonesfamilyfarmnc.com.

In the Meat Department, you will now be able to find organic pork chops. For just $12.89/lb, you can enjoy organic, healthful, wholesome, and humanely raised pork. Check out Organic Prairie’s website, organicprairie.com, to learn more about the family farmers who are part of the Organic Prairie’s farmers’ cooperative. Not only can you find information about the farmers, but great recipes too!

If pork chops are not your thing, check out the Orca Bay Sockeye Salmon in the freezer section. Sockeye has a robust and rich flavor, considered by many as the very best of all salmon varieties. Sockeye Salmon has a firm and succulent texture that remains pleasantly moist in cooking. Not only that; it packs a healthy punch! Sockeye is naturally rich in beneficial Omega-3 fatty acids.

Have a favorite food that you don’t see in the Fresh & Frozen Department? Tell one of our team members. We are always looking for new and exciting products that provide the taste you want with the buying standards you trust. As always, our team is committed to providing the healthiest products for you, your family, and our planet. We make purchasing from local growers and small farms a priority. We work to ensure that our products are free of GMO’s, hydrogenated oils, and artificial colors, sweeteners, preservatives, and flavors. We provide you with meats and dairy products that are free of hormones and antibiotics. We offer beer and wine from smaller vineyards and microbreweries and make organic and no sulfite choices available. Whenever possible, we purchase from companies with ethics and standards similar to the Co-op’s.
