We all know the basics of staying healthy during cold season: wash your hands, get plenty of rest, eat lots of fruits and vegetables…But with the change of seasons and all the running around we tend to do before the holidays, our bodies need all the help they can get to stay fortified and shake off any illnesses that try to take hold. A great way to give your body the support it needs is with a Lemon Ginger tonic, made with just five good-for-you ingredients:

Lemon

Lemons are a source of antioxidants and Vitamin C, both essential to a healthy immune system. It is also reported that lemons can help stimulate certain systems in the body that flush out toxins. Detoxing is a must when we feel a cold coming on!

Ginger

One of the oldest and most popular natural remedies, Ginger is known for its ability to soothe digestive disturbances. It’s also considered by many to act as a decongestant and antihistamine, helping to clear the sinuses with its spicy, bright aroma and flavor. A little bit of fresh ginger juice definitely wakes up the taste buds and makes you feel like you can breathe again.

Cayenne

A pinch of cayenne goes a long way, as the capsaicin, present in all chili peppers, makes the cayenne inherently hot and spicy. But it has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving principles and to help increase circulation. Just a dash or two, depending on your taste preference, adds a nice, warming zest.

Honey

If you have a sore throat, there’s nothing like the soothing sweetness of some honey stirred into a cup of hot tea. Some studies indicate that it could also have antifungal and antibacterial properties, so adding it to your immune-boosting routine can’t hurt

Hot Water

And the most important component: water! Don’t we all have the voice of our mother echoing in our heads, “Make sure you’re getting plenty of fluids!”? As usual, mom knows best. Especially when we’re feeling immuno-compromised, drinking lots of water is so important. A good rule of thumb: take your body weight (in pounds) and divide it in half, and that’s how many ounces of water you should drink every day.

Something about this warm, slightly spicy beverage is revitalizing and comforting all at once. Made with simple ingredients found in most pantries, it’s easy to make at home if you have a juicer (or really good blender!). But, if not, stop by the Co-op Cafe and one of our baristas will gladly make one for you.
