Election season is here!

Tidal Creek is governed by the Board of Directors. This group works directly with our Co-General Managers to steer the long term vision of the co-op and be sure that we are adhering to all bylaws and policies. All owners are welcome and encouraged to run for and vote in this election.

As a cooperative business we operate under the seven cooperative principles:

  1. Voluntary and open membership
  2. Democratic member control
  3. Member economic participation
  4. Autonomy and independence
  5. Education, training and information
  6. Cooperation among cooperatives
  7. Concern for community

Through our annual election we ensure that we are following that 2nd principle: Democratic member control.

Each owner gets a vote and a voice, meaning that each owner has the chance to vote for new and returning members of the Board of Directors and to run for election themselves!

What does the Board of Directors do?

The Board of Directors is the governing body for the owners of Tidal Creek Co-op. It is composed of nine people, all Owners of Tidal Creek, elected by Owners. A maximum of two directors may also be employed by the cooperative, although all directors represent the ownership at large rather than any special subgroup. Terms for Directors may range from one to three years as needed to ensure no more than three terms are scheduled to expire every year. The board is responsible for ensuring organizational performance on behalf of all of Tidal Creek Co-op Owners.

This work includes developing clearly stated expectations through written policies; delegating responsibility for, and authority over, the achievement of stated objectives; and monitoring compliance with written policies. The Board of Tidal Creek Co-op should be strategic and visionary with its view toward the future of our Cooperative, and how we can make a difference in our community, rather than focusing solely on the short-term. By devoting time to focus on the big-picture vision of Tidal Creek, the board will ensure that we adequately position our organization for the maximum benefit of our Owners.

The Board governs the organization and delegates all operational duties to one employee, the General Manager. They are involved in strategic planning, financial oversight, ownership linkage and community outreach.

What doesn’t the Board of Directors do?

The Board of Directors does not make decisions about, become involved with, or take part in any of the day-to-day activities or decisions regarding the operation of Tidal Creek Co-op. The Board’s sole official connection to the operations of the cooperative is through the General Manager.

Don’t call it a come back!

It is an exciting time to get involved at the co-op as we are looking at a nice profitable year after a few years of economic downturn and increased competition. You have shown us that a community owned grocery store is a priority for our community and we want to continue to live up to our mission of serving and connecting our community through a thriving natural foods cooperative business.

Thank you for voting with your dollar and helping us put people before profits!

We need owner involvement now more than ever in our 36 year history.

Though our hard work and dedication is paying off, we are still facing new competition every single day. The success of the co-op depends on owner participation.
