If you are new to Wilmington, NC you may not know that Earth Day and Arbor Day are a really big deal to most people in town. Arbor day is a day dedicated annually to public tree-planting in the US, Australia, and other countries. It is usually observed in late April or early May. From the Wilmington Earth Day Festival to the Earth Day Outdoor Movie on the lawn at Tidal Creek Co-op, there is a lot going on around this eco-friendly holiday!
What are the top five ways to celebrate Earth Day this year in Wilmington? We would suggest:
1. Check out the Wilmington Earth Day Festival
Stop by Hugh Mcrae Park on Saturday April 25 to celebrate Earth Day with a variety of fun activities. Live music will be featured throughout the event, which goes from 12 pm to 6 pm. The event is free to enjoy, with a few goodies available for purchase! There will be local and organic foods, beverages, and beer to sample and buy. See the event page for more details.
2. Co-op Class: Growing the Home Herb Garden

3. Outdoor Movie at Tidal Creek Co-op to celebrate the Earth!
Bring blankets, lawn chairs, family and friends to enjoy some great food & cold beverages and an awesome movie about the earth. The Cucalorus Film Festival will be showing Yakona: A Journey Through the Eyes of a River” for Outdoor Movie Night under the stars on the Co-op lawn.
Yako_na means Òrising waterÓ in the language of the indigenous people of the San Marcos River in Texas. This film is a visual journey through the crystal clear waters of the San Marcos River and its headwaters at Spring Lake. The story takes the viewer from prehistoric times, through the modern era, on an impressionistic journey from the perspective of the river.

4. Learn How to Eat Green
While it is great for your body (and your wallet) to eat vegetarian or vegan one day a week, are you eating as “green” as you can? How far is your food coming before it makes its way to your refrigerator or pantry? How local is the cheese or dairy you use? The produce? The meats and fish? Are any of the foods from small farms and local establishments? These things make a huge difference on the environment, and one thing that you can do to celebrate Earth Day 2015 is to start learning where to get the greenest foods possible, such as a dependable health food store in Wilmington – Tidal Creek Co-op is a great place to start!
With buying standards that ensure that foods are all organic, healthy for the buyers as well as the planet, you can use the power of your purse to start saving the world by choosing to shop at Tidal Creek. Tidal Creek Co-op is a grocery store thatÕs owned by the community. You don’t have to be an Owner to shop at the Co-op but all customers can purchase an Ownership in the Co-op ($30 a year) which helps save you money and support the storeÕs activities and charitable causes.
