Meet Katherine Roberts and learn more about how she would like to help make a difference in our community!
Are you an Owner?
Yes
What is your favorite Tidal Creek Co-op product or food?
I love the Earthforce powder. I also love the many varieties of fresh juices, the very well-equipped salad and hot food bar, and the range of organic and humanely raised animal products.
How often do you shop at the Co-op?
I shop for groceries at the co-op once or twice a month, and may come in more often for a juice, smoothie, or salad and hot food bar, especially if I am attending a Yoga workshop at Wilmington Yoga Center. When I was running my nature based business, I sourced some of my raw materials, including several forms of salt, from Tidal Creek.
Have you ever volunteered or worked at the Co-op?
I have provided co-op employees with product samples from my nature oriented business, and have donated a better business flower arrangement to the Co-op itself. I came to the Co-op a few days later and noticed that the store was packed and there was a longer than usual wait time at the register. To me, that signified that the Flower Arrangement worked for the purpose it was intended and brought in more customers.
Do you have any experience sitting on a Board of Directors?
I served three years on the board of the Circle of Friends, a non-profit service and fellowship organization, and was a student senator at my small liberal arts college. I also had the opportunity to sit in on several Habitat board meetings while an AmeriCorps member serving my service year term with Habitat for Humanity of Horry County. I was also a guest of the RacePath community and honorary board member at their board meetings for several months.
What unique skills or perspective do you feel you would bring to the Board?
I am familiar with co-operative associations from my days as a college student. I have worked with several non-profits and small businesses, and have been in business for myself.
What is your reason or motivation to run for the Board of Directors?
I am a big fan of co-operative associations. I was introduced to them as a student at Oberlin college, and miss playing a role in one.
What makes Tidal Creek Coop Important to you?
I feel that Tidal Creek is a unique part of the Wilmington community and can be an important resource for generations to come. For my own sake, I love being able to access healthy, nutritious, often locally grown foods usually at reasonable prices.
Are you able to donate the time necessary to be an effective Board member?
Absolutely. I will have 10-15 hours each month which I can allocate specifically to my duties as a Board Member, including attending meetings, presenting presentations to groups in the local community and other duties. I also look forward to sharing the good news about Tidal Creek with friends and associates one on one when I have the opportunity.
What else would you like Tidal Creek Co-op Owners to know about you?
I have experience being part of several food co-operatives which were part of the OSCA association at my college, and served various roles including KP and Head Cook. I was also active in the Food Group at IICD Massachusettes, another institution I attended following college. I chaired meetings, did all job scheduling, and was in charge of placing the food order each week. I also co-ordinated the campus to help unload and put away the food after I picked it up or it was delivered to us, and solicited food preference and allergy information, communicated it to cooks, and kept in mind when placing food orders. Recently, I assisted in co-ordinating a small community garden at the former Harmony Yoga on Oleander Drive, as well as a small backyard community garden in North Myrtle Beach, where we utilized organic methods to keep plants healthy and disease free.
Good luck Katherine!
