Meet 2015 Board Candidate Susan Young

Are you an Owner?

Yes

What is your favorite Tidal Creek Co-op product or food?

I love the bulk section and the raw pecans are an every day food. So glad my co-op carries them!

How often do you shop at the Co-op?

I shop at the co-op about once a week, sometimes once every two weeks. My family and I live near Maple Hill in Pender County, about 50 minutes away.

Have you ever volunteered or worked at the Co-op?

I have not yet worked or volunteered at the co-op. I just moved to NC in November and have been working to establish an organic fruit and vegetable farm.

Do you have any experience sitting on a Board of Directors?

I have been on many boards before for public libraries, nonprofits, political groups and corporations. Most importantly, I was a founder and board  member for the Prairie Harvest Market Co-op in Wisconsin.

What unique skills or perspective do you feel you would bring to the Board?

In terms of perspective, I would bring a rural presence to the board. While the co-op serves its neighborhood, and Wilmington, it also serves the region. I am trained in consensus decision-making which would benefit the board and the membership. I am a former small business owner with knowledge of purchasing, sales, employment, public relations, and farm to market systems. I have lots of budgeting experience. I’ve also been an educator for many years in a variety of situations, able to convey information succinctly, perceive how that information is understood, and adapt!

What is your reason or motivation to run for the Board of Directors?

As a person new to Southeastern NC, it’s important to me to become a part of the community, to both share my skills and values and better understand the culture of the community. Having worked with food and food systems my entire life serving the co-op in this way seems a natural choice.

What makes Tidal Creek Coop Important to you?

Access to fresh, healthy food is a privilege that should be a human right. The cooperate model is a noble form of governance and business that is about as equitable as we can get. This co-op is about both of those things. How great is that?

Are you able to donate the time necessary to be an effective Board member?

Sure. I’m a doer who likes (constructive) meetings. That means that I’m comfortable making informed decisions and I love to do physical work. As a farmer I can often flex my schedule and set aside time for important projects.

What else would you like Tidal Creek Co-op Owners to know about you?

I’m happy to share more about myself, but I look forward to knowing more about my Tidal Creek Co-owners more.

Good luck Susan!
