As a co-op, supporting local farmers and producers is intrinsically linked to our principle of concern for the community. Local farms are at the core of our produce department. With over 30 local vegetables and fruit varying seasonally, we champion the farmers of the greater Cape Fear region. We believe in knowing where your food comes from and incorporating the farm-to-table ideology into every day life. In that spirit, we’d like you to get to know Black River Organic Farm.

Located about forty miles north of Tidal Creek in Ivanhoe, NC, Black River Organic Farm is a 16-acre certified organic farm that has been growing heirloom and traditional vegetables for over fifteen years. The lushly green and fertile farmland is near the banks of the Black River which winds across Sampson County (a USDA StrikeForce county). Stefan Hartmann, owner and operator of the farm, moved to Ivanhoe, where his grandparents lived, from Germany in 1984. He is a regular face (a jovial expression always on it) in our community, seen at farmers markets, farm-to-fork events, and here at the Co-op, delivering the day’s freshly picked harvest.

Stefan’s vegetables are always of the highest quality, a standard you can trust because of his philosophy of stewardship for the land and emphasis on the health of the seeds and soil. Supporting Black River Organic Farm is a reinvestment of resources into our rural community. It’s also a surefire way to get some of the best tasting produce out there, always grown with care and almost as good as if you picked it from the field yourself. You can find them weekly at the Riverfront Farmers Market, or daily here at the Co-op.
