Summer is officially begun, school has been out for a while now, and summer boredom is starting to take its toll on many kids and parents alike. To beat the summer blues, maybe it’s time to grab some sandwiches and a blanket, throw those kids in the car, and explore the three most beautiful summer picnic spots in Wilmington, NC.

1. Airlie Gardens

For more than 100 years, Airlie Gardens has amazed visitors as one of the most scenic parks in Eastern North Carolina. The park includes elegant formal gardens, rustic hiking trails, breathtaking views of Bradley Creek, and historic structures and sculptures for visitors to explore. The biggest draw of the garden is quite possibly the great Airlie Oak- a tree that has been growing longer than our country has been in existence. By picnicking beneath this 500-year-old tree, visitors can take part in carrying on a social tradition that has endured for centuries.

Picnic tables are strategically placed throughout the park, and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. A general admission entrance fee is required, and may be purchased at the gate or online. Members of the military and New Hanover County residents are eligible for reduced admission with valid military ID or proof of residency. The garden is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is located on Airlie Road, just northwest of Bradley Creek Point.

2. Hugh MacRae Park

Families with young children in tow may enjoy taking advantage of one of our county public parks. Hugh MacRae Park, which boasts two great age appropriate playgrounds- one for toddlers and one for big kids. You may wish to walk across the footbridge to enjoy an informal picnic in the gazebo next to the pond or on one of the park benches at the water’s edge. If that’s not your style, six pavilions are available for informal picnics.

In addition to the playgrounds and picnic areas, the park includes a separate off-leash dog area, and several wooded trails and hiking paths that are short enough for little legs, and just long enough to wear out any toddler in time for his or her afternoon nap. Hugh MacRae Park is located in central Wilmington at the intersection of Oleander and College streets.

3. Greenfield Lake

Another perfect area for picnicking is the beautiful park and gardens found at Greenfield Lake. The scenery experienced at the lake is said to have inspired the first Wilmington Azalea Festival, held annually when the colorful flowers are in full bloom. In spite of the waxing and waning of the blooming season, visitors can enjoy the lake and its amenities year round.

While picnic shelters are available, we suggest a leisurely blanket lunch on the bank under the shade of the many mature trees that grow in the park. Kids may enjoy exploring the playground areas, practicing tricks in the skatepark, or leisurely cycling on the four mile walking and biking path. Greenfield Lake Park and Gardens is located just a few miles away from Historic Downtown Wilmington, at 1739 Burnett Blvd.

Before we know it, summer will be a memory, and our kids will be busy settling into the new school year. While you can, take time to enjoy the great outdoors with your children, and take advantage of the many beautiful picnic spots in Wilmington!
